How to Pick a Body Shop

Choosing the right company to paint or repair your vehicle can be very confusing. These facts will help you choose the right company and make an informed decision regarding who repairs your car:
  1. No law requires you to get more than one estimate.
  2. By law, you are not obligated to use any particular shop for repairs. You make the decision as to where your car will be repaired, and you authorize repairs as the vehicle owner.
  3. You do not have to accept the insurance companies initial estimate of the damage. See your insurance policy’s appraisal clause to determine the proper way to handle any differences.
  4. You are ultimately responsible for paying for the repairs to your vehicle and must make all payment arrangements prior to your car being released.
Now that you know the facts, ask these questions when talking to a potential repair facility.
  1. Will you show me around your facility? Pay attention to the cleanliness of the facility. Evaluate how the manager or sales person is handling your questions.
  2. Is a written estimate always provided? How does the shop handle any changes that might need to be made to the written estimate during the repair process?
  3. Is all work guaranteed and for how long?
  4. Ask family, friends, and neighbors for referrals. Nothing speaks for a repair facility like a word of mouth referral.
